--- FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ---
General
Q: Is Markden free?
A: Yes. Markden is free to download with all features included. AI features require your own Anthropic API key, which you get from console.anthropic.com. You pay Anthropic directly for any AI usage.
Q: Does Markden require an account?
A: No. Markden works entirely without an account. There is no sign-up, no login, and no email required.
Q: Does Markden work offline?
A: Yes. All editing, note-taking, and file management features work fully offline. Only AI features require an internet connection to communicate with the Anthropic API.
Q: What devices does Markden support?
A: Markden supports iPhone and iPad running iOS 18.0 or later.
Files and Storage
Q: Where are my files stored?
A: All files are stored locally on your device in the app sandbox. They are not synced to any cloud service.
Q: What happens to my files if I delete the app?
A: All files and data are permanently deleted when you remove the app. We recommend exporting important files before uninstalling.
Q: What file formats does Markden support?
A: Markden supports 13 formats: Markdown (.md), plain text (.txt), todo.txt, JSON, YAML, TOML, INI, CSV, Org-Mode, AsciiDoc, Zim Wiki, iCalendar, and vCard.
Q: Can I access my files from the iOS Files app?
A: Markden files are stored within the app sandbox. You can export individual files using the share function in the editor.
Q: Is there a file size limit?
A: There is no hard limit. Markden handles typical text files (up to several MB) without issues. Very large files (10MB+) may experience slower syntax highlighting.
AI Features
Q: How do I set up AI features?
A: Go to Settings, then AI (Claude), then tap Set Up API Key. Enter your Anthropic API key from console.anthropic.com. The key is stored securely in your iOS Keychain.
Q: What data is sent to Anthropic?
A: Only the text you actively send through AI Chat or AI Quick Actions is transmitted. Data is sent directly from your device to api.anthropic.com over HTTPS. Markden has no servers and never sees your data.
Q: Can I use Markden without AI?
A: Yes. AI features are entirely optional. All editing, note-taking, task management, and file features work without an API key.
Q: Which AI model does Markden use?
A: Markden supports Claude Sonnet and Claude Opus. You can switch between models in Settings.
Q: How much does AI usage cost?
A: You pay Anthropic directly based on their API pricing. Markden does not charge any additional fees. You can see your estimated session cost in the AI Chat menu.
Q: I got an API error. What should I do?
A: Common causes include an invalid API key (check Settings), exceeded API quota (check your Anthropic dashboard), or no internet connection. If you see a 500 error, Markden will automatically retry up to 2 times. Try again in a few moments.
Privacy and Security
Q: Does Markden collect any data?
A: No. Markden does not collect analytics, crash reports, usage data, or any personal information. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
Q: How does file encryption work?
A: Set a master password in Settings. Then you can encrypt individual files using AES-256-GCM encryption. Your password is stored in the iOS Keychain and never leaves your device.
Q: What happens if I forget my encryption password?
A: The encryption password cannot be recovered. If you forget it, encrypted files cannot be decrypted. We recommend storing your password in a secure password manager.
Q: Is my API key safe?
A: Your API key is stored in the iOS Keychain, which uses hardware-backed encryption provided by Apple. The key is only sent to Anthropic's API for authentication and is never transmitted anywhere else.
Tasks and Todo
Q: What is todo.txt format?
A: Todo.txt is a plain text format for managing tasks. Each line is a task. You can add priorities like (A), contexts like @work, projects like +projectname, and due dates like due:2025-12-31. Learn more at todotxt.org.
Q: Can I archive completed tasks?
A: Yes. Tap the menu icon in the Todo view and select Archive Completed. Completed tasks are moved to done.txt.
Troubleshooting
Q: The editor toolbar is not visible.
A: The toolbar appears above the keyboard when editing. Make sure the keyboard is active by tapping on the text area.
Q: Syntax highlighting looks wrong.
A: Markden detects the format from the file extension. Make sure your file has the correct extension (e.g., .md for Markdown, .json for JSON).
Q: The app is slow with a large file.
A: Very large files may cause slower syntax highlighting. Try disabling line numbers in Settings to improve performance.
Q: My changes are not saving.
A: Check that Auto-Save is enabled in Settings (set to 1, 3, 5, or 10 seconds). If set to Off, you must save manually from the editor menu.
