A Novel by Mark Johnston
A realistic science fiction novel set in the not-so-far-away future.
Book One of the New Enlightenment
The relentless effects of climate change have driven Earth to its breaking point: catastrophic storms, raging wildfires, mass extinctions, and an unstoppable wave of human migration. Governments are paralyzed, and corporations are blinded by profit, ignoring the collapse of the very society they depend on. As poverty, starvation, and global conflict spiral out of control, the world teeters on the edge of chaos.
But not everyone is ready to surrender.
Solar Umbrella is a gripping tale of survival and innovation, where a small group of visionaries, led by Parker Varia, refuse to accept defeat. With the clock ticking, they set out to design and build a revolutionary device that could reverse the ravages of climate change. Standing in their way are powerful corporate forces and the unforgiving march of time. Yet, amid the despair, Parker and his team dare to hope, believing that their actions could reignite the spark of optimism and change the course of humanity’s future.

Book facts:
Writing time: Not sure. I wrote 2/3 of it one summer break (2 months) 2022. I wrote the other third and did first edits the next summer (2 months). I edited further and made small changes over the next 3 months here and there. Book released in Nov. 2023. I'd estimate that it's at least 300 hours of work between edit, reread, planning, research, etc.
Book length: 104 thousand words, about 300 pages. 66 chapters (I love books with short chapters so you can pick how many to read).
Swear words: My grade 6/7 students were really interested in this stat. Shit (37 occurrences), asshole (5), fuck (30), bitch (2), dick (2). Not sure on just ass alone. If we assume there's maybe 80 swear words in there, it's still only 0.07% of the book - this was deemed "acceptable" by my students.
Additional info: I started writing the book just to see if I could write one and learn the proper rules of dialogue and all that stuff to become a better teacher. I ended up being proud of my work enough to clean it up and publish it with Amazon. Learning about the whole process was a lot of fun.
Will there be a Solar Umbrella 2?
