Student Evaluations

The following show visual representations of student evaluations spanning from the Fall of 2022 to the Fall of 2023. The data comes from the two classes I have taught in the English department, ENC 1101 Composition 1 (2 sections) and ENC 1102 Composition 2 (4 sections). The data represent all the categories asked in the USF student evaluations, along with data indicating the comparisons between students' evaluations and their GPA, and my evaluations compared with other ENC 1101-02 courses, evaluations in the department, and in the college. I also began conducting an independent, mid-semester check-in in the Fall 2023 semester, and the two sections' responses are also represented.

All classes I have taught at USF have had a cap of 19 students, and the ENC 1101-02 courses are required prerequisites for graduation. All the quotations next to the data are comments from student evaluations

"Finley goes above and beyond to make sure his students understand assignments through engaging lessons that appeal to our age demographic (creating a short video to explain our assignments with our peers) and pushes his students to become comfortable with one another which created a very trusting and safe classroom

environment."

"I could not think of a better or more engaging way to teach an English course. Everything he does, is done for a reason, and that reason is always explained well for his students. He puts us out of our comfort zone which I think is a great way to build connections with one another and grow. I was not looking forward to taking a second English course as an engineering major but I have never left class without saying, I'm glad I showed up today and I give all of that credit to Mr. Finley."

"Professor Finley has been an exceptional professor. He is great at making his students feel at ease and offers help in any situation. He is very adamant about his students succeeding and makes the class enjoyable. He makes me excited to come to class, so much so that I will be taking his class again next year. I could not recommend Professor Finley enough."

"Professor Finley has to be one of my most favorite instructors I have had over my course of schooling. Not only does he teach the class the objectives of the course, but he does so in a creative way.

Knowing this, he creates fun lesson plans in order for us to learn. These ideas that he has for us to learn, have helped me actually understand the assignments, and I am able to write more about them because of a fun way we learned about it in class. He is also very understanding and overall very respectful towards his students and actually wants us to learn something. He keeps us engaged in class and also helps us if we need some guidance for assignments. Overall, I have learned much more about myself as a writer and finding the joy in it again, to which he is responsible for a large part of it."

"Amazing professor with a lot of care for his students. I couldn't have asked for a better Composition II Professor and am really glad I choose the class. The games were very interactive and made learning fun which is something that's hard to find in modern day teaching."

"Absolute favorite professor in college. He was nothing but kind and understanding of all students and their situations. Often I feel like professors don't care about their students, they make their lessons boring and hard to sit through, and most of them won't even respond to emails. Finley was the exact opposite, and never failed to keep class interesting and show students he cares. He also is amazing at emailing students back and answering any and all question. You can just tell he cares, and I am forever thankful."

"Finley was a fantastic professor. I can tell how much work he put into the way the assignments that were to be taught to us. He explained every single class why he had us do certain group activities and showed us that he had a purpose to every activity. You can tell he is so passionate about his classroom environment and has truly made it is an amazing ENC 1102 experience. I feel bad for anyone taking 1102 and not having Finley as their professor."
