During my post-doc, one of the activities that kept me focused and motivated was writing a heroic fantasy novel. I wrote parts of it while experiments were running! I published the novel with Evasion, fulfilling a childhood dream in the process. This experience also made me realize that literary reading committees are often much nicer and more constructive than some scientific reviewers...
