Imagine its 2 in the afternoon and your watching your favorite daytime TV show then suddenly doing the commercial break a shot of a mans tans chiseled abs appears on your screen. The ad continues to show a slim young lady who is also in a bathing suit in a small boat a cliff dive away. The man then jumps off the cliff and enters the boat with the young women and gets on top of her and after a little intense rubbing the young lady puts her hand in the back of his shorts reveling the slightest bit off the mans butt cheek. Suddenly the director yells "CUT" and the clapperboard that reads "Scene 69 Take 6" blocks the view of the camera. Then that sexy Italian song that was playing in the background all cuts and you snapped out of that slight day dream you were in and you hear an voice-over all to realize this was just a commercial for the a new cologne.
Society has rather clear standards of that id considered "sexy" and isn't. Lets take the man for example he has the nice toned defined muscles, hes tanned, he has enough facial hair, but not to much, and there not a blemish, bump, or pore in sight. As Kilbourne taught us this type of imagine is not natural it is achieved by airbrushing and photo shopping.
The same goes for the young lady. Would this commercial had been looked at different if the young lady were thicker, had more waist and stretch marks? What is the man was hairy had a "beer gut', would it still be "sexy"? The real question why create these images of humans that humans may never actually be able achieve. Well the answer is simple. Its what sells.
Everything about this ad screams pornography. This ad pushes the limits of what is allowed on public television without technically crossing the line. When it comes to advertising the term "sex sells" is pretty often used. Something that plays a big part in the formation of the ad is the background music, an Italian song called La Canzone De' Amor, this song truly sets the mood for the commercial with its slow tempo and smooth violin playing.
The music and the actions in the ad of the young lady pulling his pants down create an image in the viewers head that something is about to happen like when the scary music comes on in a horror movie. It is intended to make the viewer feel like if they buy this product too will have this type of experience.
I personally feel that Kilbourne would have a lot to say and would more then likely be disappointed. Like she tells us in Killing Us Softly 4 "There is a terrible emphasis on psychical perfection". Like Kilbourne would i feel that the images portrayed in this commercial are unrealistic. The women and man are seen as objects like the cologne and perfume and they are a set, the perfect match.
As an owner of the Dolce and Gabbana Light Blue cologne i will be the first to say it is a good product with a nice smell, but that does not take away from the fact that the advertisement for this product is inappropriate and unrelated to the product. Advertisements should be friendly to all ages and should make people feel like they are just item who belong together because they are pretty. As a whole we should take a step back from the beauty standards on society and think of everybody in every shape, color, and size as "beautiful".
