We are so excited to announce some of the cleanups we have led and been apart of! We hope we can take these small steps towards influencing change around out Charlotte community.
Woohoo! Our first cleanup in the books! Though this was a small initiative, myself and my two friends, Ashley Schindler, and Sindhu Damo helped clean our local neighborhood streets. We collected over 30 pounds of plastics, styrofoam containers, and glass. This was a big win for our first cleanup and we are excited to see where our initiative may take us! Please contact us if you would like to consider joining us for our next big event we have planned for September!
Our second cleanup underway, we are so excited to announce our volunteer work with the Catawba Riverkeepers! This weekend we gathered 10 people to the Mount Holly area in an effort to cleanup upstream Catawba River. The scenery was quite dismal, with the over 100 aluminum cans we found strewn across the shores, styrofoam containers neglected and littered, and glass bottles buried underneath sediment. However, with the help of passionate environmentalists and everyday citizens we collected over 70 pounds of trash and spread the message to others around the area about our microplastics crisis. We hope that when we return the area will remain just as clean as we left it, and we have confidence that North Carolina is on its way to our zero waste proclamation.
That's right everyone, Marine Clean held their first interview! With us we have guest speaker Professor Justin Baumann from the Bowdoin College institute in Maryland to discuss his research on microplastics pollution in relation to marine ecology. Professor Baumann has been pivotal in our own research projects and in analyzing samples of microplastics around the North Carolina area. Listen to our detailed discussion on research and advocacy and its necessity in the face of this not so micro problem!
