To better understand ceramic coating prices, it’s important to understand what is required in order to apply a ceramic coating properly. By the way… in case you aren’t a reader, we’ve attached a video here to SHOW YOU! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_LHPJB0Tr4&t=330s
Before applying a ceramic coating to the paint of your car, and before touching your paint at all for that matter, we have to ensure that the paint is more than clean. Your paint must be completely bare naked before any professional work is done! Simple car washing will not make the cut. During the preparation phase we will walk you through how we completely strip and decontaminate the using a 4-stage process:
‘The pre-wash wash’ allows us to remove as much surface dirt as we can from the car's paint before we touch it. That is exactly what you think it is- ‘Traditional car washing’. The difference is, we don't stop there. Next, we move into our good old-fashioned hand wash. We use the same effective technique that Grandpa used to shine up his old show car or that you followed when you were cleaning Mom and Dad's car as a kid! Almost, except we use better chemicals, better techniques, and special processes, but you get the idea.
Next up is the ‘iron decontamination phase.’ This phrase may mean nothing to you if you have not grown up around cars or been acclimated to the detailing world. There are many microscopic contaminants eating away at your car's paint and many people are not aware of this. These contaminants can't be seen with the naked eye and that is why they are the leading contributor to paint DAMAGE! Don't worry our special chemicals will handle them for you.
Nearing the end of our preparation phase, we move into ‘clay barring’ the paint. Have you ever washed your car and then ran your hand across the paint? If so, it more than likely was not a smooth surface even though your paint LOOKS CLEAN! There were bumps and ridges. Your car paint felt textured like sandpaper. The clay bar phase in our ceramic coating preparation removes any or all contaminates that remain embedded into the paint of your car. This creates a smooth, glassy surface that you have likely never experienced before.
Lastly, we finalize our ceramic coating preparation with the ‘final wipe down & solvent removal’ stage. This is exactly what is sounds like. Once again, we use our special chemicals to remove any last-minute oils, residues, waxes, or any other chemical that is left on the surface of the paint.
With your paint now being entirely stripped and in its most bare form from the ceramic coating preparation process, it's time to level out the clear coat and remove some scratches! Durable, long term paint correction that is guaranteed with a ceramic coating, makes any little imperfection within your cars paint stay there for the duration of the coating after application. Here in Ohio the weather can't ever seem to make up its mind. We get snow one day, sun the next, then it's raining, in an instant hail begins to drop. You may be saying "yeah that's Ohio weather for ya". Let not forget about the bugs too. These elements add up and leave your paint damaged. For that reason, it is a necessity for us to correct your paint to some degree before the application of a ceramic coating to remove paint imperfections. This not only allows us to create a smooth, scratch free surface, but it also makes sure that your ceramic coating bonds with your paint correctly. There are 2 major types of paint correction: Paint Enhancement & Paint Correction.
The simple answer: Paint enhancement is a form of paint correction that is less aggressive and extreme. The goal of paint enhancement is not to remove all imperfections, but instead surface scratches and defects. We cannot express enough that all imperfections WILL NOT be fixed. Paint enhancement is the most common type of correction we do! Why so? Well, tiny imperfections that are hard to see to begin with do not concern many customers. Instead, these customers are more concerned with getting their ceramic coating applied to obtain protection!
Paint correction is nothing more than more aggressive paint enhancement. Can you see the pattern here? Paint correction is performed when we encounter REALLY DAMAGED paint, or a customer who has a detailed eye. Maximum amounts of scratches, swirls, etchings, and paint imperfections are taken care of during paint correction. As I mention before, this is not just for visual appeal, but rather to help the ceramic coating bond to the paint by creating a smooth surface.
The simple answer is: Yes & No. Ok… maybe it’s not so simple. The answer really comes down to what you hope to achieve with a ceramic coating. Some customers understand that, with paint correction ceramic coatings will have a longer life span, However, they still choose to not get any degree of correction done for a more budget friendly option. There are in some cases where paint correction is necessary and optimal as we move into our longer duration ceramic coatings. We love discussing options with our customers to find not only what is right for them, but for the best results. Even the most surface level of paint enhancement will extend the life of the ceramic coating, create an amazingly beautiful surface, and maximize your dollars spent… so we like to say: “It’s your choice… but we are biased” :)
After all of that work… It's now time to install the ceramic coating. You know how a surgeon goes to school for 8-12 years before they ever cut into an actual person? Most of the work is in the PREP! That is a great way to understand ceramic coatings. While there is a lot of technical skill included in the ceramic coating application… most of the time and labor is done in the preparation! Ceramic coating installations take anywhere from 1 to 3 hours depending on the size of the vehicle, but the preparation takes ALL of the other hours. Depending on the amount of paint correction done, a ceramic coating installation can take somewhere between a single day, and 2 to 3 days to finish. We hope this sheds a little more light on why ceramic coatings come with this price tag… in addition to having lifetime protection on your vehicle!!!
