English subject involves materials and the subject matter are prepared ahead of time, and its content depicts on the things such as deeper understanding and exercising the language. From the start since I am a language teacher. I am expected to teach them the pronunciation, definitions, translations and basic information about the system and how to write a simple sentence. I also added content in English translated in Bahasa and involves more of the gestures as I discussed to easily portray the meaning. I also let them recite one by one, the passages and sentences displayed in a PowerPoint presentation.
The challenge is to maintain their interest and involve them in the process as many as possible. Teaching language subject subject especially to students whose English is not their second language is a challenge. But a challenge needs to face and solve.
Every classes will have only 1 hour and 30 minutes time a lotted. I make sure that before I enter the door and face my students I am already equipped with the materials that I will use in the whole learning process. Since I am assigned to teach English to Grade 7 students. I need to captivate their attention. And provide examples according to their age level. I always help them to communicate in English as much as possible. Its is a challenge for me and for them.
Most of my time I do not just stand in front. It is important to maintain the contact with students through the learning process. I tend to let them read the sentences and assess their pronunciation in real- time. Its one way to correct them one by one if there is an error in those aspects.
In every class, there’s always a challenge arises. If the student is not engaging in your materials, you have to help them and solve them with patience. Teacher is a part helper in an activity.
My journey in SMP Muhammadiyah Muliska has taught me more than just understanding the competence of English in their school but driving me more understanding about how it is important to them and how will I solve problems inside the classroom in terms of ways for them to learn. This program has not only expose me to the realities of teaching but also finding a unique cultural experience that I cannot just seem to forget. From the students, to the teacher and to the places and foods. This experience has gives me so much to hope for. Truly what a journey!
