Maria Sauval

PhD candidate (UC Irvine)

I am a PhD candidate in Education Policy and Social Context at the University of California, Irvine, and an Assistant Researcher at VATT Institute for Economic Research.

I will join the Department of Economics at Aalto University as a Postdoctoral Researcher in August 2024.

Research overview

My research interests include analyzing the effectiveness of social policies, particularly early childhood programs and interventions, and understanding how those affect families' behaviors and wellbeing.

I am currently working on a variety of projects. First, I collaborate with the Baby's First Years study, a randomized controlled study aimed to measure the effects of unconditional cash transfers on child development. I have been involved in different tasks since 2019. Among others, I am analyzing whether receiving this cash transfer had any effects on maternal employment.

Second, I have some projects analyzing the North Carolina pre-kindergarten (NC Pre-K) program. For instance, I am using temporal and geographic variation to measure whether and how childcare providers (of all types) are affected by the openings of NC Pre-K centers.

Third, I am working with colleagues to study the short and medium-term effects of implementing suspensions of the payment of Asignaciones Familiares, the Uruguayan conditional cash transfer program. We focus on suspensions due to non-compliance with educational conditionalities, and on the educational and labor outcomes of the children.
