For Practicum 2, I was placed in Whare 5B- Rūma 16 with year 5 students. While I was on practicum, their classroom was being renovated so we were in the Hall with the other two year 5 classrooms. I have thoroughly enjoyed working at Taradale Primary School. All of the ākonga and staff have been so welcoming. I was so fortunate with my AT. She has supported me not just in my teaching practice but with my life in general and for that, I am truly grateful!
Taradale Primary School places a strong emphasis on the importance of Hauora. Through Kāhui Ako the School uses this community to help students to achieve their full potential by providing them with help for their hauora. For example, providing ākonga with counselling.
Students will be encouraged to value:
Excellence
Innovation, inquiry and curiosity
Diversity
Equity
Community and participation
Ecological sustainability
Integrity
Respect
Through community consultation, Taradale Primary School has developed its own set of values and, again these are not exhaustive rather they are reflective of what the majority of our community see as important.
We believe that these are very evident in all that we do, all that we expect and all that we model. These values are articulated often within the overall structure of our learning culture.
We also endeavour to link these values to other artefacts across our school – the dimensions of our Whakawhanaungatanga..
We have ten values, however we believe that two of these values; Respect and Personal Excellence are overarching values, being the umbrella for the other eight values.
These are listed below and are not in any order of importance.
Compassion
Creativity
Honesty
Self-Discipline
Consideration
Flexibility
Purposefulness
Tolerance
Taradale Primary School uses SENCO which supports the pastoral, academic and social needs of ākonga.
If the whānau of ākonga do not have enough funds the School can provide support where necessary.
There are whānau evenings at the beginning of each year.
Access to Hero.
Privacy- When ākonga enrol at the school their whānau are able to decide whether images of their ākonga can be posted to public platforms or only private platforms like Seesaw. This documentation is regularly updated and all kaiako are made aware.
The school provides lunch for those ākonga who come without any.
Each classroom has a health and safety clipboard for all ākonga so that relievers and all staff are aware of allergies etc. Also, while I was on practicum I was a part of a lockdown and earthquake drill.
Taradale High School have connections to:
Moremore who is the son of Pania of the Reef.
Otatara Pā which is a historic reserve walk.
Waiohiki Marae.
Taradale Primary School takes pride in caring for their whenua by prioritising their garden maintenance.
At Taradale Primary School, they have their own school pool, hockey turf and fitness course.
There is a very special and historic love tree on the school grounds where ākonga are able to write their names and a wee message when they graduate and or move schools from Taradale Primary School.
Taradale Primary School has a strong focus on the three R's which are: Respect, Relationships and Responsibility. These values are school-wide and if ākonga are displaying any of these three R's at any given time kaiako can praise them with a whakawhanaungatanga award explaining which one of the 3 R's they were displaying.
