A peer assessment rubric serves as a valuable summative assessment tool, enabling educators to comprehensively evaluate students' needs, monitor their progress, measure growth, and ultimately assess student outcomes. By structuring the peer assessment rubric to encompass various dimensions of performance, such as content mastery, critical thinking, collaboration with peers, and communication skills, I was able to gain a holistic understanding of each student's abilities. I made a connection to Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 7 - Performance Indicators - The competent teacher: 7J) uses assessment results to determine student performance levels, identify learning targets, select appropriate research-based instructional strategies, and implement instruction to enhance learning outcomes; because using such a rubric as a summative assessment thus becomes a powerful tool for educators to gauge the overall success of their teaching methods, determine student level of content mastery, and the effectiveness of the lesson. Meanwhile, informal assessments, like class discussions or observations, offer a more nuanced and immediate insight into student understanding and learning styles.
