Working on the flip video helped me understand the importance of Teaching Standard #2. It is evident through the video and lesson that I can deliver alternative teaching methods that incorporate technology, which are always available to my students and their guardians as stated within Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 2 - Performance Indicators – The competent teacher: 2L) demonstrates fluency in technology systems, uses technology to support instruction and enhance student learning, and designs learning experiences to develop student skills in the application of technology appropriate to the disciplines; The flipped video was created to provide a meaningful learning experience for all students. The video introduced Safari Reader, an assistive technology application that will help all students remain focused while reading online articles by removing unnecessary pop-up ads. By creating this video and posting the link to a YouTube video for easy access, I could provide this essential information to students and their parents. Through this experience, I could utilize a visualized lesson and a meaningful experience that will benefit all students and parents. I learned that by creating a flipped video, students and their parents can review the content as often as they wish to comprehend the instructions. The instructions and examples in the flipped video will demonstrate the students' and parents' ability to use the app to help the students' reading comprehension by removing all the unwanted distractions from an online article. I also learned that technology used to make the flipped video into lessons enhances student learning by providing dynamic visual aids that cater to diverse learning styles. Videos can vividly illustrate complex concepts, making abstract ideas more tangible and accessible for students and guardians. Additionally, technology, such as a flipped video, allows for interactive elements, engaging students in a way that fosters active participation and encourages a deeper understanding of the lesson content.
In my 4th-grade Early American history unit, I demonstrate a profound understanding of content area knowledge and central concepts through meticulously designed instructional units. My lessons include historical narratives that illustrate interconnected events that shaped our nation. The unit focused on the settlers' voyage to form the thirteen colonies, settlement in the New World, the cause and effect of the American Revolution, and the Bill of Rights. Navigating through key historical events, cultural shifts, and societal structures in depth within the lessons, I was able to expand the content differently throughout each lesson to expose students to critical and creative learning approaches as stated in Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 2 - Knowledge Indicators – The competent teacher: 2C) understands the cognitive processes associated with various kinds of learning (e.g., critical and creative thinking, problem-structuring and problem-solving, invention, memorization, and recall) and ensures attention to these learning processes so that students can master content standards;. Working on my unit plan, I learned my role as an educator goes far beyond teaching lessons. Most importantly, after working diligently on my unit lesson plan, I learned the teachers’ primary role is to teach factual information and encourage critical thinking and problem-structuring of historical events among students. This comprehensive cognitive approach illustrates my in-depth knowledge of the content area, fostering a rich and meaningful learning experience that enables students to develop a deeper understanding of Early American history.
