The School Board approves policies and budgets for the entire school corporation. That means that they have a significant role in determining everything from teacher salaries to everyday policies and rules that govern student experience in schools.
There are seven spots on the School Board, some representing districts and some at-large. The board is currently in transition from some district seats to at-large, and there are three at-large seats up for election in fall 2024.
You can find the current list of board members here: https://www.lsc.k12.in.us/corporation/board-of-trustees/members Some members represent individual districts, while others are at-large and thus represent the entire school district.
No, school board races are nonpartisan by law. That means that people's names appear on the ballot without a party affiliation. While some candidates may have party affiliations or experience, they do not represent a party while campaigning or serving on the board.
School board terms are for four years, and part of the board is elected every two years. This year, there are three seats up for election, while the remaining four will be up for election in 2026.
The Lafayette School Board has one public meeting a month, as well as one work session. Both are held on Monday evenings at the Hiatt Administration Center at 2300 Cason St between Murdock Elementary School and Sunnyside Intermediate School. The regular meeting is typically held on the second Monday evening of the month at 7 pm, while the work session is typically held on the fourth Monday evening of the month at 6:30 pm. Both meetings are open to the public. Meeting agendas and minutes can be accessed here: https://www.lsc.k12.in.us/corporation/board-of-trustees/meetings-agendas-and-minutes
Anyone from the community can speak at a meeting. There are two times for this “public comment”; the first is for public comment on agenda items, which comes early in the meeting. The second is for public comment on non-agenda items, and that comes at the end of the meeting. Public comment on non-agenda items can address any concern whether or not it was previously discussed at the meeting. To speak, you should sign up on a piece of paper which is usually on the table to the right of the door when you enter the room. When speaking, you should say your name and address for the record.
