All children, whatever their race, gender, or zip code, deserve the freedom to learn in safe and supportive environments. That also means having access to books and other materials that tell an accurate and honest story of the world and our history. Students deserve to see themselves represented in what they learn, and they also must be given the opportunity to learn about viewpoints and experiences different from their own.
We must do all we can to prioritize fair wages and good benefits for all employees across the school corporation, from teachers to paraprofessionals to bus drivers. Currently, we are losing trained professionals to other school districts or careers because they are not being paid or supported enough in our district.
Mental health and bullying are serious and related issues in our schools, and we need to address them with intentional policies, regular training, and adequate funding. We also need to ensure that we have enough school counselors to give students the care and attention they deserve.
We must ensure that our schools are accessible for all learners, regardless of their ability. Students with disabilities need support to be fully integrated. Likewise, board meetings must be accessible and transparent to the public.
