This summer, I have been working with a social justice non-profit organization named On Earth Peace (OEP) as their racial justice and gun violence prevention intern.
During this experience, I have been given the tools needed to lead advocacy groups and events for individuals, churches, and national organizations. With these tools, I can navigate tasks like analyzing user engagement on OEP’s webinar platforms and developing marketing strategies to find other gun violence advocates. By working closely with one of the executive directors and fellows at OEP, I have been able to enhance my advocacy skills and experience professional work in both marketing and analytics. My major projects included creating a Printify storefront to design and sell an OEP GVP t-shirt for members and supporters. We received almost $2000 worth of orders with over 100 t-shirts sold!
My goals for this experience were to develop my social program-building skills and obtain deeper insight into how ingrained gun violence is in some communities. As one of my first non-medical extracurriculars, this experience was significantly important to me as I want to diversify the perspectives, goals, and beliefs I am surrounded by. This goal of mine can be accomplished given OEP, as a racial justice organization, specializes in uplifting the voices of all, regardless of race, creed, or background.
By exposing myself to this diversity and combining my role as a racial justice intern with research on prominent issues that need to be acknowledged and dismantled, I am taking one step closer to becoming a global citizen scholar.
