I am a Professor of Economics at the Department of Economics and Statistics “Cognetti de Martiis”, University of Torino, a Research Fellow at the Collegio Carlo Alberto, and a Programme Associate and Visiting Researcher with the Global Governance Programme at the European University Institute, where I am based for my 2025/26 sabbatical.

My work tries to understand the drivers of private sector development in low-income countries, using firm and individual data. I look at foreign investment, trade policy, transport infrastructure, public procurement, and the structural transformation of labour markets — mostly, though not only, in sub-Saharan Africa. On these topics I regularly consult with national and international organisations, including UNCTAD, UNICEF, UNIDO, UNU-WIDER, the Asian Development Bank, the African Development Bank, the ILO, the IMF and the World Bank.

I co-organise the “Firms, Labour Markets, and Development” Workshop.
