Workshop: Experience Topology Through Clay

Organized by Constanza del Campo, a faculty member at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (UC), and developed by Lilian Alcón (ceramist) and Marcos Canedo (mathematician), this workshop took place on September 25 and 26 of 2024, at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.

With the premise of experiencing mathematics through art, the workshop invited undergraduate and graduate students in mathematics to explore topology firsthand. Participants engaged in modeling to experience the classical transformation of a torus into a cup through their own hands.

Conference: Musical Actions of the Dihedral Group

The sequence of pitches which form a musical melody can be transposed or inverted. Since the 1970s, music theorists have modeled musical transposition and inversion in terms of an action of the dihedral group of order 24. More recently music theorists have found an intriguing second way that the dihedral group of order 24 acts on the set of major and minor chords. In this talk, I showed both geometrically and algebraically how these two actions are dual. Both actions and their duality have been used to analyze works of music as diverse as Hindemith and the Beatles.
