“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.” ~Benjamin Franklin
In my first career in Information Technology at Air Products, I learned so much about hardware, software, networking, content management, training, customer service, support, research, troubleshooting, project managment, website development, and collaboration.
Outside of Air Products, I created a home-based business, designing and hosting websites for small businesses and non profit organizations. I also did a little networking marketing which fit in well with my website business. These opportunities utilized the skills I had learned but also taught me more about marketing, networking, lead generation, direct sales and team building. I ran a daycare in my home for three years due to a need for a safe place for our children. The daycare taught me about running a business with employees, following state standards, program development, billing and scheduling.
All of the skills I learned at Air Products and in my businesses have been essential to my teaching and will benefit me in anything I do. I am strong believer in learning by doing and proved the importance with my experiences. However, my education, both undergraduate and graduate, connected everything. A love of learning challenges me to constantly learn, grow and try new things as well as to influence others to do the same.
Currently, I am teacher and the Director of the Makerspace Program at an all-girls Independent Schoool with students from around the world, 6th through 12th grade.
I teach:
Engineering - 8th Grade Science
Robotics - 11th and 12th Grade Science Elective
ESL American History - 9th and 10th Grades
Coding - 6th Grade
Last year (2016-2017) I taught Math 7 - 6th and 7th Grade.
At my previous school, a Pre-K thorugh 8th grade Independent School I taught Engineering and Design to 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades as a special. I also worked with Pre-K through 4th grade teachers to bring their students into the Makerspace for hands-on learning projects.
The characteristics that make me who I am also make me an effective teacher. I am a very creative person. Creativity is essential to all aspects of teaching; classroom management, planning, instructional delivery, and assessment. I am a hard worker and I put my whole heart into my work. I never settle for good enough. I truely care about what is best for my students and they will know that they are my priority. I will encourage a love for learning, curiosity, collaboration, common sense, respect and individuality; all traits that have served me well.
