Guidelines for mentors

We hope that through the MAP program and with guidance from our mentors, we can help individuals who wish to pursue a PhD to take a step further into the amazing world of life science research!

In order to help mentors make the best use of this platform to pass on their expertise and experience, we have developed a set of guidelines.

  1. All mentoring activities will take place based on individual interactions of the mentor and mentee, and using the Slack Workspace.

  2. We encourage you to set up a preferred time slot with your mentee for interactions.

  3. Be prepared to listen to your mentees. While your skills are very well developed, ultimately the application is a product of your mentee. Listening and questioning might assist your mentees far more than just providing advice.

  4. Mentoring activities include (but are not limited to) providing guidance in choosing programs, approaching labs/PIs, application procedures, proofreading SoPs and other aspects of PhD applications.

  5. Mentoring does NOT include writing any letters or SoPs for the applicant, writing letters of recommendation and other documents. We strongly encourage you to not engage in such activities. The MAP program will not associate with or support such activities.

  6. In all mentoring activities, mentors are expected to act professionally. Please be aware of the power differential that exists in this working relationship.

  7. Any incidents of personal advances (sexual or otherwise, including but not limited to verbal abuse) will not be tolerated.
