Guidelines for mentees

We hope that we will be able to find a perfect mentor for you to help you with your application process. We hope that you have a great experience and the MAP program can act as a springboard for your entry into graduate programs around the world!

In order to help mentees make the most of this resource, we have developed a set of guidelines.

  1. Meet with your mentor and establish timelines early. Decide dates by when you want feedback on different parts of your application (SOP, Personal statement, exam scores etc.).

  2. Decide frequency of meetings with your mentor and ensure all communication is through the Slack Workspace.

  3. The role of a mentor is purely for guidance and feedback, and your mentor will help put forward different options. All of the heavy lifting in terms of writing, formatting, and final decision making is your responsibility. Remember, you are the person applying to graduate school.

  4. This is a voluntary service by the mentors. Please be kind, respectful, and prompt in your interactions with your mentor.

  5. Try to establish expectations at the very beginning. Figure out which part of the application process you need most assistance with and communicate with your mentor.

  6. Please keep in mind that the guidance you receive from your mentor is based on their own personal experiences. The final decisions regarding every aspect of your applications are yours and yours only.

  7. Mentors and the MAP program have no associations with graduate school application committees and admission teams. The mentor (and MAP) are not responsible for the outcomes of your applications.

  8. If you, for any reason, feel uncomfortable with the interactions you are having with your mentor, please contact us as soon as possible. We will do our best to assign a new mentor to you.
