The Manurewa STEAM Hub

The Manurewa STEAM Hub is your go to place for inspiration on all things related to STEAM and Integrated Curriculum. Created by the Kaahui Ako STEAM Team, we hope to inspire staff in our community to begin to trial STEAM and Integrated teaching and learning opportunities in their classrooms.

What is our focus?

STEAM: An educational approach that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking.

STEAM-based programmes take an integrated approach to learning and teaching, which requires an intentional connection between curriculum learning objectives, standards, assessments, and lesson design/implementation.
STEAM learning applies meaningful maths, science, and technology content to solve real-world problems through hands-on learning activities and creative design. (TKI)

Curriculum integration: A collective term for curricula where meaningful learning activities are designed by crossing discipline boundaries and/or utilising multiple disciplinary perspectives with the purpose of helping students to create and enhance knowledge and understanding (Dowden, 2014).

About

In 2019, the Kaahui Ako STEAM team conducted research into the perceptions and needs of staff when it came to STEAM Education and Integrated Curriculum. This report was updated at the end of 2020 to include information from Manurewa West Primary School. Across the board, we found a lack of consensus among staff as to what STEAM and Integrated Learning was. On the whole, staff believed that these educational approaches had value, however, they were unwilling to attempt them in their classrooms as they perceived they lacked the resources and support to do so effectively. This website is a response to these findings and is an attempt to make STEAM Education more accessible to staff in our community.
