As an important part of my activities, I am committed to increase the general public's awareness of science and to promote female students towards a career in STEM. Since I am PhD student, I give outreach talks and organize guide tours to the lab for high school, graduate students and general public. I also took part in several science open days in Madrid (“Semana de la Ciencia”) and in Munich (Tag der Physikerinnen, Tag der offenen Tür, "Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften").
IMDEA Nanociencia is once again participating in Science and Innovation Week with educational activities aimed at schoolchildren and the general public. n 14 November, the workshops were adapted for people with visual impairments. The ‘Touch Nanoscience’ workshops focused on learning about different aspects of nanoscience with all the senses.
We prepared a “Braille STM” workshop in which students could carry out a hands-on activity to understand the mechanism of a scanning tunneling microscope.
A small step for graphene, a giant leap for electronics and spintronics. We have opened a band gap in graphene using tellurium, allowing the control over the flow of electricity.
And there’s a comic that explains it. More info
Once again, IMDEA Nanoscience joins the celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (February 11th), proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015. This day aims to draw attention to achieving full and equal access and participation in science for women and girls, attaining gender equality, and fostering scientific vocations and innovative spirit among girls, encouraging them to pursue scientific and technological careers. IMDEA Nanoscience celebrated the International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2024 with a visit to the CEIP Principe de Asturias. The children from the 1st year of Early Childhood Education participated in two workshops on nanomaterials and nanomedicine, led by researchers Ana Pizarro and Manuela Garnica.
On 22 December 2015, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to establish an annual International Day to recognise the vital role of women and girls in scientific and technological communities, to support and promote their access to and participation in education, training and research activities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics at all levels. It was then decided to proclaim 11 February each year as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. [Source: un.org]
This year I have participated in this activity together with other four female scientists, in which we had the opportunity to disseminate our projects to better understand the work of women in the science.
The 11th MADRID IS SCIENCE Fair is a science outreach event aimed at school communities and the general public which, through the participatory action of students, aims to promote scientific vocations by eliminating gender barriers, communicate the science and innovation carried out in our region, stimulate the interest and curiosity of young people in science and show how research influences economic development and the welfare of society.
