In March 2024, MANNA introduced grouping as a new approach to building food security in WNC through increased neighbor access and dignified experience. Grouping supports our Partner Agency network and illuminates ways we can collaborate to achieve our collective goal of ending hunger and its root causes in Western North Carolina.
Grouping places MANNA's partner agencies in like-groups with each other based on the neighbor access and experience they provide.
There are five groups: Transformers, Builders, Responders, Foundational, and Under Review.
MANNA is implementing grouping to ensure the best use of limited resources, reduce food waste in WNC, and center a dignified neighbor experience over pounds out the door.
If you aren't sure which group your agency is currently in, please contact your Agency Relations Manager.
For the Western Zone (Qualla Boundary, Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Jackson, Macon, and Swain Counties), contact Amy Hutchings at agrimes@mannafoodbank.org or (828)747-8247.
For the Eastern Zone (Avery, Henderson, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Transylvania, and Yancey Counties), contact Kristen Ollila at kolilla@mannafoodbank.org or (828)290-9721.
For Buncombe County, contact Lucy Phillips at lphillips@mannafoodbank.org or (828)338-9212.
Each agency's group is determined based on their responses to MANNA's annual survey. If you feel your agency has been grouped incorrectly, you can request to be regrouped.
An overview of the requirements for each group is available here.
There is no need
Reduce your workload and reduce barriers! Need may be self-determined; trust folks to know what they need, how much they need, and when they need it - just like you do. Also, gathering and storing personal information, such as social security numbers, puts you at risk because you and your agency could be held liable in the event of a data breach.
Destigmatize Asking for Help
It's especially hard to ask for help the first time. Don't engage in the power dynamics of "food policing." We want neighbors to know these services are for them, regardless of income. We are gateways, not gatekeepers. Someone may be having a one-time event that is making it difficult for them to make ends meet for a couple of months. Having to prove who you are or where you live isn't necessary, and it may make folks reluctant to reach out for assistance. Anonymity is important for some, especially in smaller communities. Respect that.
Creating A Welcoming Environment
Welcome folks and let them know what to expect, including that they do not need to provide any documentation. Have greeters with warm smiles to set the tone for a warm and dignified experience. Invite neighbors using your website and social media and ask others to share this information. Engage with the trauma-informed resources offered by MANNA and use this information to make positive changes to your pantry process and environment.
If you have made changes at your agency that you believe qualify you for a different group, help us celebrate your improvements to neighbor access and experience by requesting to be regrouped.
After you complete the form, your Agency Relations Manager will contact you to confirm whether your agency has been regrouped.
