At MAM Farms, we strive to produce cattle that work for the commercial cattleman. For us, that starts with cows that perform in a fescue-based environment, primarily grazing standing forage 280+ days a year. We believe extending the grazing season is one of the most cost-effective ways to raise cattle while keeping capital expenses low.
At the same time, our cattle must work for every segment of the beef industry, from the commercial producer and backgrounder to the feedyard and ultimately the consumer. That means combining functional, efficient cattle with the performance and carcass traits needed farther down the beef chain.
Because one type of animal cannot excel at everything, we have begun using sexed semen to develop two more distinct types of genetics within our herd: maternal and terminal.
Maternal Genetics
To us, maternal means a female that gets bred, raises a quality calf and brings it to the weaning pen every year. We select for fertility, maternal instinct, sound udders and feet, fleshing ability, and cattle that shed well in a fescue-based environment. If your goal is to retain replacement females and build your cow herd, we recommend considering our maternally focused genetics.
Terminal Genetics
For our terminal cattle, we mate solid maternal cows to more terminally oriented sires. We still expect these cattle to be functional, sound-footed and slick-haired, but place greater emphasis on growth and carcass traits. If you primarily sell calves by the pound or into a value-added program, these genetics may be a better fit for your operation.
MAM Farms is an American Angus Association Data Driven Silver Level herd and participates in MaternalPlus®. We collect as much information as possible on our cattle to provide customers with useful, dependable data when making breeding decisions.
Our bulls are developed at Reymann Memorial Farm in Wardensville, West Virginia, where feed efficiency, gain and carcass data are collected. They are fed a high-roughage ration and developed to come to you in a lean, working condition. Bulls are also genomically tested to add accuracy to the data we provide.
We are primarily a fall-calving herd and typically begin offering bulls private treaty around October 15. We appreciate your consideration of MAM Farms when making genetic decisions for your herd.
