I'm a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh. I'm also a member of the Edinburgh Meaning Sciences Group. Occasionally, I'm a guest at IPM's School of Analytic Philosophy in Tehran. I specialize in the philosophy of mind and language, but I'm also interested in metaphysics and the history of philosophy (especially early Islamic thought). I received my PhD from MIT. I was an undergraduate at Reed College. (I'm very fond of Portland, Oregon.)
I was recently interviewed for an article in New Scientist about the role of philosophy in AI. For more information about my research, teaching, and personal interests, have a look around. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or comments. My email address is the result of concatenating 'malmotah' with '@ed.ac.uk' in the standard way.
I'm on research leave this academic year (2026-27) and won't be responding to requests for supervision (unless you're one of the students I've already agreed to supervise over this period).
