I had no idea what I was going to do with my life in my senior year of high school. I had no idea what degree I wanted to pursue or which institution to go, and graduation was only a few months away. I battled with the thought of picking a path, and the pressure to make a decision felt overwhelming. Then an unexpected opportunity presented itself: a school competition in which I, as a student of industrial design, had to collaborate with students of architecture to redesign our dilapidated art and design school. The objective was to design an area suitable for artists, and this team effort would be a spark that changed the direction of my future.

I spent three months learning how to use Blender, which was my first 3D modeling program, and I soon found myself hooked in the process. I created a whole building from the ground up, which was exciting and difficult. I became familiar with 3D design and animation through the experience, and I knew this was a field I wanted to learn more about. I chose to apply to Miami Dade College after looking at universities with good animation and 3D modeling programs after the competition. I learned Maya, one of the top 3D tools in the industry, there, which helped me expand my knowledge and opened my eyes to a whole different world.

De La Cruz Competition

During the Competition, I had a real enthusiasm to learn the advanced 3D program Blender from scratch and create the final project as shown. This took me 2 months (5 days a week, 6 hours each day) to model the entire building. 

Presentation Boards and Models. Architecture & Industrial Design students join into teams. The purpose was to redesign our highschool which is currently falling apart and make it into nurturing environment of art students.
