MakeID is built around the principle that your data stays yours. This page explains exactly what MakeID does and does not collect.
## What MakeID does not collect
- MakeID has no user account. There is no login, no email signup, no password.
- MakeID has no analytics SDKs. No Firebase, no Mixpanel, no Sentry, no Crashlytics. The only telemetry is Apple's standard App Store Connect crash reporting, which you control in iOS Settings.
- MakeID does not sell, share, or rent any data to anyone.
- MakeID does not use your data for advertising. There is no advertising in the app.
- MakeID does not contain a tracking SDK and does not implement Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt because there is nothing to track.
## What stays on your device
- The cards you create, including the photos you import.
- The templates you customize.
- Your organization name, logo, and brand color.
- The custom fields and tags you define.
- The smart-feature usage count for the current month.
All of this is stored locally on your device using Apple's Core Data framework. The storage file lives inside MakeID's sandbox and is not accessible to any other app.
## iCloud sync
MakeID supports optional iCloud sync using Apple's CloudKit framework. When you have iCloud signed in on your device and have not turned sync off in MakeID, the following applies:
- Your cards, templates, and organization data sync between your own Apple devices through your private iCloud database.
- MakeID developers cannot read this data. CloudKit private databases are accessible only to your Apple ID.
- The data syncs only between devices signed in with the same Apple ID. It is not shared with anyone else, ever.
You can disable iCloud sync at any time in MakeID Settings, or in iOS Settings under your Apple ID and iCloud.
## Smart features and the Claude API
MakeID includes optional smart features such as Auto-Map, Paste Import, Natural Search, and Field Translator. When you use one of these features, MakeID sends a small piece of text to Anthropic's Claude API to process it. Examples:
- Auto-Map sends the column headers of your CSV plus two sample rows so the API can suggest a mapping.
- Paste Import sends the text you paste so the API can structure it.
- Natural Search sends your search query and the names of your fields so the API can translate the query into a local filter. The values inside those fields are never sent.
What is never sent to the Claude API:
- Photos. There is no image path in MakeID's API integration.
- Documents, PDFs, or files of any kind.
- Your full library of cards.
- Combined profile data such as name plus date of birth plus address.
Per Anthropic's API terms, requests are not used to train Anthropic's models, and are retained for up to 30 days for abuse detection before being deleted.
You can disable smart features entirely in MakeID Settings, in which case no text is ever transmitted.
You can also supply your own Anthropic API key in Settings (Bring your own API key). When set, your key is used instead of MakeID's, your usage is billed directly to your Anthropic account, and the key is stored only in your device's iOS Keychain. MakeID does not transmit or store your key anywhere else.
## Photos and the camera
When you add a photo to an ID card, MakeID uses the iOS Photos picker or the camera. Photos are stored on your device only and never uploaded anywhere, except into your own private iCloud database if iCloud sync is enabled.
The photo library and camera permission strings shown by iOS describe exactly how each permission is used.
## Children
MakeID may be used to create ID cards for children (school IDs, for example). Cards are created by parents, teachers, school administrators, or other adults responsible for the children. MakeID does not collect children's data directly. Any photos or names placed on the cards stay on the adult user's device under their control.
## Your rights
You can:
- View all of your data: open MakeID and everything you have created is there.
- Export all of your data: Settings, Backup and data, Export ZIP.
- Delete all of your data: delete the MakeID app from your device. If iCloud sync was on, also remove MakeID data from iCloud in iOS Settings, your Apple ID, iCloud, Manage Account Storage, MakeID.
