Major League Sailing
2026-03-25 MLS Closed
Yes, it is sad that we have reached the point where MLS must close.
This decision is not based solely on a team leaving season 23. It is the result of a pattern over time — specifically the behaviours and conduct of some participants in recent seasons.
Differences of opinion about format, rules, and interpretations are a normal part of competitive sailing. However, repeated and increasingly critical feedback directed at the RC, PC, and the structure of the event has had a direct and lasting impact on the ability to continue running MLS.
MLS has always been organized by volunteers, with the aim of creating a competitive but enjoyable fleet racing environment. That effort depends on a foundation of mutual respect and a willingness to accept decisions, even when there is disagreement. When that foundation is consistently strained, the result is not constructive progress, but gradual erosion.
It is important to be clear: MLS is not ending because of the format, the rules, or a lack of interest. It is ending because the environment around the event has, over time, made it unsustainable to continue.
A small number of participants, through the tone and nature of their engagement, have had an impact far beyond their number. The cumulative effect of that has led directly to this outcome.
This is, unfortunately, a familiar situation. The Blues League followed a similar path.
At this point, the RC no longer has the motivation or energy required to continue.
We are grateful to the many sailors who supported MLS, raced in the spirit it was intended, and made the event what it was over the years.
Competitive racing requires strong opinions — sustaining an event requires respect.
