Majakaneng is a friendly rural township, with a population of about 25 000, within the Magaliesberg Biosphere about 14 km along the N4 from Brits towards Rustenburg.
The town lies on the northern slope of the Magaliesberg range and the Heritage Hiking Trail starts at the edge of town, winding its way up to the mountain summit where hikers experience incredible views in all directions while walking along the ridge-line. Eventually the trail descends through a wooded kloof of spectacular forest trees alongside a mountain spring and stream. The heritage trail is a 10km circular hike. Other trail options include a 5 km circular route that reaches the top of the first northern ridge, or an easy 3km walk through the shady forest and kloof.Â
Many excellent examples of British fortifications from the South African War are dotted along the summit and if hikers are very quiet, they may get a glimpse of the resident pair of endangered Mountain Reedbuck who appear to have successfully reared a young calf this season, as now there are three!
