The 1st Blue Carbon Symposium on March 7, 2023 took stock of blue carbon science in Maine and northern New England, and prompted discussion on strategic next steps for scientific inquiry and collaboration.
This symposium: 1) delivered a state-of-the science across Maine’s community of blue carbon researchers, 2) convened a shared understanding of key scientific uncertainties in the field, and 3) anticipated critical scientific needs in the near future landscape of coastal decision-making. The Symposium built capacity for applied blue carbon research and aligned Maine’s blue carbon research agenda for a science-integrated path for coastal management and climate action relating to tidal marsh, eelgrass, and macroalgal ecosystems.

The 2nd Coastal Carbon Ecosystems Symposium will take place on October 21, 2025. The Symposium will bring together a diverse group of legislators and government partners, coastal stakeholders, scientists and others to collaboratively advance research, policy initiatives, and innovative strategies that protect and enhance Maine’s coastal carbon resources.
This symposium will: 1) Recommend strategies to expand access to and interest in Maine coastal carbon science, economies, and governance, 2) Identify new pathways in policy, environmental stewardship, and economic opportunity to enhance Maine's coastal carbon ecosystems and the communities they support 3) Capture and synthesize key Symposium outcomes, action items and strategic next steps.
