The Level 3 Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is a standalone qualification in the UK, often taken by students alongside A-levels, but it can also be taken by students studying other Level 3 qualifications. The EPQ allows students to produce a piece of work on a topic of their choice, which could be a dissertation, an investigation, a performance, or an artifact. It's designed to allow students to demonstrate skills in independent research, project management, and self-directed learning.
The EPQ typically involves:
Choosing a Topic: Students select a topic that isn't covered by their other studies but is of personal interest.
Proposal: Students put forward a project proposal which gets approved by the EPQ coordinator or supervisor.
Research: Students then undertake research on the topic, which could involve reading books, articles, conducting experiments, or even interviews.
Final Output: Depending on the nature of the project, the final output could be a written report, a performance, a piece of art, or any other relevant format.
Presentation: Often, students will be required to present their findings or their project to an audience.
The EPQ is valued by universities because it demonstrates a student's ability to conduct independent research and manage a long-term project. It can also be beneficial for students applying to university because it allows them to delve deeply into a subject that might be related to their intended course of study.
