Our group, Forecasting Insights and Decision Making, focuses on advancing the field of forecasting and decision-making through cutting-edge research and practical applications. We specialize in developing innovative machine learning models and decision optimization techniques to solve complex problems across various domains, including business, energy, and supply chain. We aim to bridge the gap between theoretical research and real-world applications, providing valuable insights and solutions that drive effective decision-making processes.
At QUT, we are committed to fostering a collaborative research environment where students, researchers, and industry partners work together to explore new frontiers in forecasting. Whether you are a student, industry partner, or academic, we invite you to explore our research projects, publications, and opportunities for collaboration.
I have had a chance to supervise some of the greatest minds in Queensland on several interesting problems. We are always looking for industry partners who may benefit from our research. Please reach out to me via mahdi.abolghasemi@qut.edu.au to talk more.
I am often looking for passionate students who can inspire me and who are up for a challenge. If you want to do a PhD or MSc with me, send me the following:
Your short CV with publications.
Make sure you include your transcript.
Your topic of interest for doing PhD/MSc. Read one of my papers or at least skim through them and tell me what do want to work on. It could be one of my projects or a project that you have expertise in and are passionate about working on with my mentorship.
Tips for international students seeking a scholarship at QUT.
The competition for scholarships is fierce. You need to have a high GPA (at least 85%), be in your final year or graduated from a top university in your country if not top 300 worldwide, and have some form of publication in good journals, i.e., peer-reviewed journals. Obviously, you don't need to meet all these criteria but you need a good balance of them. If you don't have a good GPA, then try to publish more and make your CV stronger. If you are a graduate of an average university in a developing country, a great GPA and publication can help.
If that sounds like you, do not hesitate to contact me and send me your CV.
NOTE: I receive many emails from students from across the world. I see them all, but I am sorry if I do not respond to you. Feel free to send a reminder after two weeks, and if I don't respond to you, it is because I am not taking students or your CV is not suitable for my projects.

I like the following piece from Agape Satori as a deep dive into my supervision philosophy:
The Real Teacher Is The One Who Shows You The Way But Lets You Walk It On Your Own In Your Own Way.
The Wise Teacher Is The One Who Shows You The Door But Does Not Tell You What To Think About What Is Behind Them.
The True Teacher Is The One Who Teaches You To Lead, Not To Follow.
The Awakened Teacher Is The One Who Is Also The Student.
The Genuine Teacher Is The One Who Knows When To Tell You To Leave Your Teacher.
The Compassionate Teacher Is The One Who Teaches All By An Example, Not Just His Students.
The Courageous Teacher Is The One Who Dares To Expand Beyond His Teachings.
The Best Teacher Is The One Who Brings Out The Teacher In You So That You May Become REAL, WISE, TRUE, GENUINE, COMPASSIONATE And COURAGEOUS"
