My name is Maggie Evans, I use she/her pronouns, and I am a sophomore majoring in neuroscience and minoring in chemistry as a part of the Bachelor's to Medical Doctor program. I am passionate about political advocacy and enhancing research efforts that benefit public health outcomes. I feel that my purpose is to improve the lives of others, which drove many of my choices. My major, organizational involvements, and research, are all orientated at benefiting my community. Through my time as an undergraduate student, I have improved my ability to effectively manage my time to perform well on all my tasks. I plan to pursue a career in pediatric neurosurgery, as well as use my education to advocate for public policy reform.
My internship has affirmed my desire to pursue pediatric healthcare, and specifically its integration with neuroscience research. I feel much more confident in my ability to make career decision based on this internship experience. The ability to differentiate work environments in which I will thrive from those I will not be critical in my future.
One of my main goals when beginning this internship was to present quality research and improve my presentation skills. After presenting in the fall, through the creation of my poster and during its presentation, I feel I grew my professional skill set exponentially.Â
During the summer, I will be continuing with my laboratory through UROP, and through the following academic year. I hope to stay with this laboratory through the completion of the undergraduate years and into medical school. I also hope to continue my involvement with healthcare equity advocacy and mentorship of fellow undergraduate students.
One of my goals for this upcoming year is to maintain a strong GPA. I also hope to grow the student organization I cofounded, Planned Parenthood Generation Action. I hope to make a trip to the Statehouse during legislative session to support the passage of bills that support reproductive freedom. I also plan to work to become more involved in volunteer efforts in the Indianapolis area by participating in more events sponsored by organizations I support.
