The Last Rites of Missy the Misfit
We needed a cigarillo prop for the actors to fake smoke throughout the entire film. I needed to make several different sizes while keeping the look consistent to be believable as the same cigarillo. I had not made these before so it was a lot of guessing and trying things out and I am happy with the finished product.
Brown construction paper
Kraft paper
Paper straw
Glue stick
scissors
Pencil
Watercolours
First you need to crumple the construction paper. I then wrapped it around the paper straw and glue the construction paper to itself.
Crumple and twist some kraft paper and use a pencil to push it into the centre of the straw. Once it is fully in, use the pencil to push out the straw and make sure to keep the kraft paper inside the construction paper that is glued together.
Once you shimmy the straw out you have your cigarillo!
Now onto painting! I took a thin paintbrush and used some water colours. I started with an orange colour and painted all of it. I then went in with a brown and dabbed over all of it. I let that dry and used a darker brown to paint the edges as well as the bottom and top. I took some orange and put it where the ember would be. I then added some yellow in a smaller scale in the center of it. After I found some gold acrylic paint then used a sliver of it in the center. And there you have it, all done. It took me a few hours to finish since I needed to do 5 of them. I am very glad with how they turned out and they looked great on camera.
