GIS and Remote Sensing Software I prefer:
MiraMon is a GIS and Remote sensing I prefer and I use more, particularly highlighting its accuracy. I can do the most part of analysis with MiraMon, It allows me to automate processes with batch files in a easy way and we have done quite heavy massive calculations easily. I think it has some limitations in editing maps for to be printed. As well, to keep in contact with programmers is easy through MiraMon Forum and I always get an answer to my questions. Its cheap (free for students and catalan administrations or research centers)
Arc GIS is a good alternative for some things I can't do with MiraMon and good to share GIS information with other people that uses it. You can do everithing you need with ArcGIS and the tools you found in the web. The things I don't like is: sometimes I feel as I don't really control the processes and I can't do them with the accuracy I need; and Its really expensive one, to keep updated is unreachable nowdays.
IDRISI is a very good alternative for remote sensing and spatial analyst. I like its accuracy. It is developed to to carry out analyzes similar to mine, so its very usefull for me. As well, I feel it's not expensive.
R Projecte for Statistical computing is really recommendable for its endless possibilities and potential calculation.
Other specific tools I like:
MAXENT for species habitat modelling. It's very useful for habitat suitability mapping when you don't have enough information (rare species or shortly sampled) or you don't have data from well-designed sampling. We've been using MAXENT in a lot of projects, it allows you to parameterize very well your information, incorporate bias information, automatizations, etc etc.
As allows you to elaborate a species distribution map in a easy way, it is important to be careful and critical with the results and it is necessary to analyse their limitations due to the original information, environmental layers disponibility, etc.
Corridor design is a GIS tool to design wildlife corridors. Very recomendable the tool conceptually and all the information they proportionate.
