Plainsong

Plainsong comes from the Latin, "cantus planus," the ancient designation for the chant, verses the elaborate polyphonic music which began to replace it. While the Catholic tradition historically uses the Gregorian chant, plainsong is a term which encompasses not only the Latin, Gregorian tradition, but also the vernacular translations of Gregorian or Sarum chants, and the new, modern compositions in chant styles. This site hopes to specially emphasize vernacular chant adaptions for those who do not have the freedom to frequently use Latin.
