The Atonement of Jesus Christ is the single greatest gift that mankind has ever received. The ability to be forgiven of our mistakes and move past them is a privilege unsurpassed by any other. The eternal significance of our families is of the utmost importance and families are center points of the plan that our Father in Heaven has created for us. There are however, many temptations and obstacles that can hinder our ability to achieve this goal. We will be focusing on an issue that has plagued many people, their friends and family for many, many years; addiction.

Addiction is a soul-numbing darkness that strips a man of his happiness and his right to choose. Satan has power over our lives if we allow him power. Falling to addiction is one way we allow him to have that power. He will use it to control our bodies and drive us into a love dulling state that can consume a person completely. Evil powers can take a drug and find a way to physically control someone through that addiction. Once we fall to addiction, whether it be drug, sex, pornography, alcohol, etc., we lose our agency and ultimately our happiness. Life without agency is a dark hole where love is almost non-existent. This hole is a steep and physically demanding climb out, but it can be done. An addict can take back agency and happiness, thanks to a loving Heavenly Father and the Plan he has for each of us.

How can the Atonement of Jesus Christ help those stuck in addictive behavior? One might wonder from time to time how something that happened so long ago, an act performed by someone we’ve never seen with my own two eyes could help me with a problem that we can’t seem to help ourselves with, no matter how many times we try or the effort we exhort.

Alma 7:11 said it best: “And he shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind; and this that the word might be fulfilled which saith he will take upon him the pains and the sicknesses of his people.” The reason that all this is possible, that Jesus Christ is able to help anyone individually and on a personal level is because in that moment of shear agony in the garden of Gethsemane, He suffered every pain, of every kind, that anybody ever had to experience. Jesus Christ knows pain, he knows our pains and our trials, and shortcomings, and frailties, and because of this magnificent act that he performed, he can help you; “… turn away from your sins; shake off the chains of him that would bind you fast; come unto that God who is the rock of you salvation” (2 Nephi 9:45).

Here is a picture of the Plan of Salvation, also known as the Plan of Happiness. In pre-mortality, we existed with our Father in Heaven and there were proposed plans, Jesus Christ and Satan's. Jesus Christ's plan was to come down to earth, receive a body, and redeem mankind from their fallen state.
Heavenly Father earnestly desires that all of His children will return to live with Him again, and through the Savior’s Atonement that is possible for everyone. We all need to apply the Atonement of Jesus Christ, whether it be through addictions, or any other sin, so that we can make it to live with our Father in Heaven. Right now, you may feel hopeless and that there is nothing else for you to do, but that is not the case. Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ are there for you, as well as your close friends and loved ones. Rely on them all, so that you can make it through this hard time in your life and come of conqueror. You are precious in the eyes of our Father in Heaven, and He wants you to return and live with Him again. Rely on the Savior, and know He is there to help you overcome anything.

God loves us. His son, Jesus Christ loves us. They have worked together in providing this incredible and miraculous plan. When we use it, we are able to become free. Listening to the voice of God and learning His doctrine will guide us through the darkness that may surround us. Our families are our lanterns, and the Plan of Salvation is our path.
