For my final Capstone project for University, I made a game from scratch. Normally this is a group project, however due to unforeseen circumstances I had to develop the game on my own. This involved dabbling in all disciplines involved with making a game including programming, modelling, level design and so many more. The result of three months of hard work was this: Magitopia.
Magitopia is a small farming game where the player has to grow and gather ingredients to make money. There is a couple of different areas to explore with different plants to gather from them. The goal of the game is to grow and bring a special crop up to a shrine at the very top of the mountain, which is a goal that may take some time. Overall I think the game could be more polished, but I am still happy with it.
The principles behind Magitopia are pretty simple, as the scope of the game had to remain small for this project. I was inspired by Stardew Valley, PotionCraft and Animal Crossing, while wanting to add my own spin to it. As of 2024, I am working on a remake of this game, with improved systems. That requires building the game from the ground up programming wise, however it is a small price to pay for a much better result!
This difficult project allowed me to practice all the skills I learned during my 3 years of university, as well as learn new ones and discover new tools that can be useful in the future.
