Craig Mathews has a wonderful blog about Fishing and Yellowstone Conservation. He posted this photo and this description on his blog, “I drove into the Park to fish. [...] we hiked along the river to revisit [...] an Indian hunting pit I’d located years before.“ (image below, link to Craig's Blog)
Craig's photo shows boulders along the river, with a meadow downstream, and a looming mountainside in the background.
Fiddling around in Google Earth, I was able to find a great match for the photo. The pit seems to be located here: 44.649375, -110.958403.
What is a Hunting Pit?
They were essentially early hunting blinds.
This document on Native Americans in Southwestern Montana describes a similarly-dimensioned pit and says, "The hunting pit [makes] it possible for a hunter to sit inside, undetected, with a view of the terrain [...]".
Here's a similar example in Colorado.
