I have been a college educator for four years now, and there is so much that I love about being an educator! This career keeps me learning, growing, and putting myself out there. It is such a beautiful experience to watch young artists grow and build confidence in their craft; I am honored every day to have the opportunity to be a part of that process. Listed below is my teaching philosophy and courses taught, along with links to follow for sample syllabi and student work.
My teaching philosophy is grounded in the belief that art is a powerful tool for personal growth, creative expression, and critical thinking. I strive to create a co-learning environment where students feel supported, valued, and empowered to take ownership of their learning. By fostering an inclusive and collaborative classroom, I encourage students to engage critically with their work, embrace experimentation, and develop both technical skills and creative confidence.
I emphasize the importance of understanding both the historical and contemporary context of artistic practice. By introducing students to diverse artists and creative methodologies, I help them see the broad possibilities within their field while ensuring they feel represented in the curriculum. I also encourage interdisciplinary exploration, urging students to draw connections between art and other disciplines such as technology, social sciences, and activism to expand the ways they approach their practice.
A core part of my teaching is creating an environment where critique is seen as a tool for growth rather than judgment. I structure feedback sessions to foster resilience, confidence, and communication skills, helping students understand that mistakes and challenges are essential steps in artistic and personal development. My assessment approach is built on clear rubrics that evaluate technical skill, effort, and creativity. I gauge student progress through the evolution of their projects over the semester, as well as through self-evaluation in the form of reflective journal entries, allowing them to articulate their growth in their own words.
I am deeply committed to embracing a range of perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences. I aim to create a space where all students feel heard and respected. I emphasize the importance of mental health and well-being, connecting students with resources and encouraging a balanced approach to their creative work.
In both asynchronous and in-person courses, I provide students with a wealth of additional learning resources, including links to videos and external materials, ensuring they can continue expanding their knowledge beyond the classroom. I incorporate emerging digital tools and online platforms to make learning accessible and engaging, particularly for students navigating different learning environments.
As an artist and educator, I am also committed to my own lifelong learning and creative evolution. Having recently completed my graduate studies, I am in a period of self-exploration, focusing on rediscovering my passions, seeking new connections, and redefining my artistic practice. This process includes considering exhibitions, self-led workshops, and research opportunities while embracing self-discovery as an essential part of my work. I see sharing my personal evolution through my practice as an act of radical vulnerability—one that I document and share to help others feel validated in their own journeys. By modeling this ongoing process of reflection and growth, I hope to inspire my students to embrace their own creative paths with confidence and authenticity.
Ultimately, my goal is to inspire students to become lifelong learners, critical thinkers, and confident creators. By fostering a dynamic and inclusive learning environment, I aim to empower them to push their creative boundaries, develop their unique artistic voices, build their confidence in their craft, and engage meaningfully with the world around them.
