Application for the 2018 Angelo del Toro Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute
Open to: 10TH, 11TH and 12TH grade high school students of Hispanic descent
Application Deadline: December 21, 2017
Applications for the 2018 Angelo del Toro Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute (HYLY) program are now available online https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/PRHYLI2018 . The institute begins on February 3rd, 2018 and is open to Hispanic/Latino students in grades 10 through 12. The program provides students with the opportunity to learn how a bill is passed in the State Assembly. Students also develop skills in writing and debating, as well as leadership skills. The institute culminates in a weekend trip to Albany. Please urge all eligible students to apply for this exceptional program. Applicants must submit a 500-word essay on the topic described below. Essay Questions (500 words)
Written Essay: Take a walk through your school’s neighborhood or the community in which you reside. Identify one organization or business that focuses on the Latino culture through its services to the community. Write an essay in which you describe its purpose and role in the community. Include a discussion of the effects of its services to the community. Identify ways the reach of the organization/business can be expanded. If its effects are negative then identify solutions to the problems it causes in the community. Explain how you as a Hispanic/Latino leader can take an active role in developing the action plan towards expanding its reach or developing its solutions.
Your task:
1. Choose one example of an organization or business that focuses on the Latino culture and describe its purpose/mission in detail.
2. Include a discussion of the effects (positive or negative) the organization or business has had on the school’s neighborhood or your community.
3. Identify ways in which you can play a role in expanding its positive reach or if it poses a problem then identify solutions to any problems it creates.
4. Explain how you as a Hispanic/Latino leader can take an active role in developing an action plan in addressing its purpose/mission.
