We all have different households and capacities for doing our part, and not everyone is able to compost at home or even have a worm bin. If you are one of these folks but still want to divert your organic materials from the landfill, you have options! In no particular order:
Lyons residents can compost curb-side with Western Disposal if you have them as your waste hauler. They have large, efficient composting facilities and while it does require energy to transport and it leaves Town, this can be a great option for keeping your organics in our region and out of the landfill!
If curbside or commercial composting isn't right for you, there's a cool service called Sharewaste. At Sharewaste.com, people with food scraps can connect with people who have capacity to compost it. It's a free service so check it out!
I operate a very small compost program for a few households in the area. If you'd like to learn more about my program contact me to see if we have capacity to help you out! The only cost is one 5-gallon blue Lowe's bucket with lid, which you can drop off with your scraps and pick up a clean empty one. Everyone having the same bucket really helps me out since they can stack together without sticking solid and have interchangeable lids. This is a small program that's been working great for me and for the folks in it, and is an informal service to offer benefit to neighbors, to the worms, and to the planet.
