This concept project provides actionable feedback for corporate employees to effectively address their biases and diversify their workplace.
Audience: corporate employees within Human Resource positions
Responsibilities: Instructional Design, eLearning Development, Visual Design, Mockups, Scripting
Tools Used: Articulate Storyline 360, Adobe XD, Adobe Illustrator, MindMeister Google Docs
As part of a larger training, this interactive e-Learning experience provides guidance, elicits performance and provides specific feedback to the learner. The problem identified was that many implicit bias trainings can have the opposite affect that organizations hope to achieve. From collaborating with SMEs, I identified that one of the primary causes of this was that the experience felt disingenuous, and that often there weren't many resources given to learners to apply their knowledge. Information-dump trainings can not only inhibit cognitive retention, but they are just not engaging. This eLearning scenario serves as a puzzle piece to the larger solution. Before the conclusion of the training, learners will engage in this scenario which applies gamification tactics to encourage learner engagement.
In order to bring this concept project into development, I first created an action map identifying the key problem-areas of implicit bias training that often cause them to fall short, as well as a proposed solution to implement into the training. I consulted with a SME in order to analyze and determine the learning objectives for the project.
Using the action map, I began building a text-based storyboard in Google Docs. I created a visual prototype using Adobe XD and revised my design according to feedback. I then began building an interactive prototype in Storyline 360. After collecting feedback on these components, and testing the interactive prototype for functionality, I completed the final iteration of the training and incorporated it into my Instructor Led Training as an assessment.
I worked with SMEs to identify high-priority actions that needed to be incorporated into the eLearning experience. The primary issue was the fact that implicit bias trainings are often perceived to be boring, and in some instances can even incite hostility within employees. If the goal was to diversify the workplace naturally through informing learners of Implicit Bias, it needed to be done in a way that provided specific, logic-based actions the learners could take to improve their experience with the training and maximize retention. After researching and analyzing data to identify gaps in previous implicit bias trainings, we worked to create this action-map detailing the actions the learner would use to apply their knowledge.
I created a text-based storyboard in order to provide a blueprint for developing the project. I introduced a mentor character, Nicole, to guide the learner through a series of scenario-based questions in which they were shown the consequences of their choices.
I created a visual storyboard in Adobe XD to serve as a mockup for the final visuals of the project. I kept the color scheme and layout simple and straightforward, since this was part of a larger training. I organized slides according to title ,question ,and outcome. I started with a very simple format to designate placement of major aspects on the slide, and then incorporated visual design from Adobe Illustrator to make the slides more visually appealing. In later iterations, a star animation was added to the correct outcome slide. Additionally, a slide was added after the title slide that introduced the "Ask Nicole" button, and to show the learner their "star rating" and they moved through the eLearning scenario.
