Breanna and Brooke Bennett successfully advocated for three years for the unanimous passage of State Rep. Rolanda Hollis’ House Bill 50 “Period Poverty Bill” in the Alabama House and Senate. The bill, which allocates $200,000 annually to the Alabama Department of Education for menstrual supplies to Title I schools, passed unanimously in April 2022. Alabama Governor Kay Ivey signed the bill into law in a public ceremony on April 22, 2023.
In 2019, the sisters started Women in Training, Inc., or WIT, a youth empowerment organization. WIT’s signature program is the WITKITS Campaign to help alleviate period poverty among the 25% of American young people who skip school or miss work because they cannot afford menstrual products. WIT provides monthly donations of WITKITS to at-risk girls, low-income women and nonbinary youth. WITKITS are branded canvas bags full of menstrual, hygiene and dental products.
With the vision to End Poverty. PERIOD! Women in Training, Inc. has programs to help girls break the cycle of poverty: WIT Leadership Development Academy and the WIT Mentor Program. The WIT-President’s Volunteer Service Award recognizes volunteers who also work to alleviate poverty.
On International Day of the Girl in October 2023, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden honored Breanna and Brooke among 15 girls, selected by the White House Gender Policy Council, who are leading change and shaping a brighter future in their communities across the United States. Nonprofit Leadership. In 2022, the Barron Prize for Young Heroes recognized Brooke and Breanna for their work. T-Mobile and Ashoka named the girls Changemakers for 2021. Always brand of Procter & Gamble has named them as Period Heroes in 2020, 2021 and 2022.
