Fanfare Politeia

Kimberly K. Archer

Fanfare Politeia is an homage to the origins of our democracy, and to the ancient sources that Madison, Hamilton, Jefferson, and Adams drew from in their conceiving and writing our Constitution. "Politeia" is a Greek word derived from "polis" (city). Aristotle used the term to represent concepts such as citizens' rights and constitutional government, while Plato's examination of justice – a book which we now call The Republic, in English – was actually entitled Politeia in the original Greek.

Commissioned by "The President's Own" United States Marine Band for the 59th Presidential Inauguration, Fanfare Politeia celebrates our traditions of a free and fair election, and of a peaceful transfer of power.

Lunette

Michael Torke

*World Premiere*

I wrote, recorded, and released an album of piano pieces in 2023, called Sessions, 3 A.M. Fifteen short pieces use order and symmetry to convey key architectural features of churches and cathedrals. The aim is to transcend the self to find peace, warmth, and respite. John Seaton suggested that this music might work well for band. LUNETTE is the first transcription from this series.

La Fiesta Mexicana

H. Owen Reed

III. Carnival

La Fiesta Mexicana is an admirable work that receives frequent performances from high school and collegiate bands. This programmatic piece evokes a variety of styles, depicting fireworks, a parade, a mass (with cantor), a circus, a bullfight, and a mariachi performance. In addition to the full band parts, an off-stage ensemble is enlisted in the score. This entertaining piece works particularly well when the ensemble has plenty of rhythmically proficient musicians. Occasionally, bands abbreviate the performance time by performing selected movements rather than the entire work.

Starry Ocean

Shuying Li

*World Premiere*

Starry Ocean is a musical journey that takes listeners deep into the depths of the ocean, capturing the alluring spectacle of marine life as it mirrors the mystical allure of a star-filled sky. The narrative in the music seeks to depict the enchanting undersea landscape that resembles Van Gogh's "Starry Night." The piece begins with a tranquil, serene depiction of the undersea world, gradually building in complexity as the marine life becomes more active and vibrant. The music reflects this flurry of activity within this undersea cosmos, creating a soundscape that is as intriguing as the bioluminescent creatures in the deep ocean.

Starry Ocean is a celebration of the beauty and mystery of our oceans, presented through the lens of a grade 3+ wind ensemble.

Embers and Droplets

Jorge Machain

Embers and Droplets was commissioned by Quinton Krull as part of his generous donation to the 2023 Opulence Gala for the Las Vegas Academy of Performing Arts. The piece begins with woodwinds playing quartal harmony while the melody is passed on by the upper woodwinds. Following this statement, the brass carries the melody on a lower, much richer, and lush register. The middle section brings the entire ensemble to an exciting and deeply profound moment, encompassing a feeling of riveting emotion by the extreme registers of the instruments and lushness of the chords. We bring the piece to a close with a quieter and tranquil moment leaving the listener with a sense of warmth and reflection.

Music for Prague 1968

Karel Husa

I. Introduction and Fanfare

II. Aria

III. Interlude

IV. Toccata and Chorale

It is the composer’s wish that the following foreword be printed in its entirety in all concert programs of each performance of Music for Prague 1968:

Three main ideas bind the composition together. The first and most important is an old Hussite war song from the 15th century, Ye Warriors of God and His Law, a symbol of resistance and hope for hundreds of years, whenever fate lay heavy on the Czech nation. It has been utilized also by many Czech composers, including Smetana in My Country. The beginning of this religious song is announced very softly in the first movement by the timpani and concludes in a strong unison (Chorale). The song is never used in its entirety.

The second idea is the sound of bells throughout, Prague, named also the City of “Hundreds of Towers,” has used its magnificently sounding church bells as calls of distress as well as of victory. The last idea is a motif of three chords first appearing very softly under the piccolo solo at the beginning of the piece, in flutes, clarinets and horns. Later it reappears at extremely strong dynamic levels, for example, in the middle of the Aria.

Different techniques of composing as well as orchestrating have been used in Music for Prague 1968 and some new sounds explored, such as the percussion section in the Interlude, the ending of the work, etc. Much symbolism also appears: in addition to the distress calls in the first movement (Fanfares), the unbroken hope of the Hussite song, sound of bells, or the tragedy (Aria), there is also the bird call at the beginning (piccolo solo), a symbol of the liberty which the City of Prague has seen only for moments during its thousand years of existence.
