The society runs two types of tabletop games: regular long-running campaigns, and one-shots. Read on to find out how to get involved with each.
Campaigns
Campaigns are weekly games that run on either Tuesdays or Thursdays at Bowland North over the course of a ten-week term. You’ll spend a campaign with the same party, in the same story, for the duration of that term. We have meetings on both days, but different games are run on each day. If you want, you can play two campaigns in the term; lots of people do, but lots of other people also just do one. There’s no obligation either way, but once you’re committed to a campaign you’re generally expected to turn up each week (although you can always let your GM know if you can’t make it).
A week before freshers, on our socials (linked at the end), we open up a pitch channel/post requesting for pitches by GMs (Game Masters - for more on the basics see our page on Roleplaying). Pitches must include a name for their campaign, what system they are using, minimum/maximum players and then a general pitch for the campaign (think like a book blurb) as well as content warnings for horror and other triggers so everyone knows what they’re getting into.
There is also a channel dedicated for people to ask GMs questions about their campaigns as well, and you can always DM the GM asking to reserve a space.
At the first meeting of each term, the GMs will read out their pitches in case people haven’t been able to see them yet. Once everyone who wants to pitch has spoken, people will choose a game to play. First-timers will always get priority on game choice, so if you’re new don’t fret that you might not get a game, as you almost always will.
These pitches always happen on the first week of each term. If you want to get involved, show up! Come on either the Tuesday or Thursday at 6pm, and you’ll be on your way to a game. Join our Discord, Instagram or Facebook page for more details as to where we’ll be meeting.
One-Shots
One-shots are run two or three times a term, and require no commitment other than showing up on the given day. They are played in one sitting, from 1pm-6pm. You pitch for them like regular campaign pitches, there is just no long term commitment or story involved. These offer you a good chance to play test new systems or have a bit of fun.
LURPS Library
If GMs want to play a system but they don’t have a system book for it, or they want to do something completely new and don’t know where to start, LURPS has its very own library! In our storage, we have 100+ system and supplementary books ready to be use by whoever. More details about how to loan a book and the conditions on the library spreadsheet.
Access the LURPS library here.
Some Advice
Communication is key and if you want to talk to your campaign group, you can always set up a group chat on discord/fb/whatsapp/snapchat/instagram to talk to other players OR you could chat to the Webmaster to set up a private channel on the LURPS discord server between your group.
