Intro - what is luminosity and what is a mask?
Intro to Masks and selections
Basics only, no involved selections stuff. That is what the luminosity can do for us.
This isn’t the selection class.
Create the luminosity Masks:
- Set Photoshop's color settings up for correct luminosity masks. See the Links and Resources page for directions.
- Use a Grayscale copy from the R or G or B channel and adjust with levels - the first and easiest way. In the Channels Panel, Command/Ctrl click one of the RGB channels. Click the "Save Selection as Channel" button. Rename the new channel if desired.
- Select Color (colors and/or tones) - also easy and more powerful as you can concentrate on tones; Highlights, Mids or Shadows and on Colors. Choose Color Range... from the Select Menu. With the selection active go to the Channels Panel and click the "Save Selection as Channel" button. Rename the new channel if desired.
- The hard way as per MADHU MANICKAM https://photographylife.com/luminosity-masks-in-photoshop (you’ll need to re-read so you can do it right, it is complicated - only demonstrate 2 or 3 then move on!) Alt+Control+Shift in PC or Option+Command+Shift in Mac
- TK V6 Basic Actions! OMG, it is free and easy. From Tony Kuyper: https://goodlight.us/writing/actionspanelv6/panelv6.html - Install and demonstrate.
- Jimmy Mcintyre’s Easy Panel. https://www.shutterevolve.com/photoshop-powerpack/ also easy and free
- One more thing...you should first make some color settings in Ps. They will make your masks more accurate.
- Go to the Edit Menu > Color Settings…
- In the Working Spaces box:
- Choose your preferred RGB space
- Choose the matching Gray space
- Then save them at the top if you switch between spaces so you can easily get them
- See the “Setting Up the Color Working Space.pdf” instructions in the TK download for the details on what to choose. But the basics are:
- Adobe RGB matches with Gray Gamma 2.2
- ProPhotog RGB matches with Gray Gamma 1.8
- sRGB matches with sGray
- Hands-On time; go back thru the example photos or better yet try it on some of your own.
