Axios was a University of Toronto Human Powered Vehicles Design Team project from 2014 to 2020. Axios was to be the fastest human powered submarine ever created, and was made of 3 inch layers of fiberglass and a thermoformed viewport. This submarine was heavy (460 kg, including human pilot weight), enabling it to dive easily, and it needed a manually operated crane for launch and recovery. Under these loading conditions, the crane was designed to have a factor of safety of at least 3 while costing less than $1000 CAD. Both metrics were achieved.Â
