The Illinois professional Teaching Standards says that "The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student growth, and evaluating student outcomes. The teacher makes decisions driven by data about curricular and instructional effectiveness and adjusts practices to meet the needs of each student". In this class, we were required to do many different things. One of those things was to complete a test analysis. We picked one chapter out of the book Educational Psychology by Anita Wolfolk. From the chapter we chose, we created questions that were at an application level. We then needed 10 student responses which was probably the longest part for this project.
This project perfectly fits the standard 7 because all of the parts of this assessment clearly fit the criteria that was mentioned in the definition above. A teacher should be able to "understand and use appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student growth, and evaluating student outcomes”. That is exactly what this project proved. Another thing was that the goal for this project was to develop questions using Bloom's Taxonomy.
I really enjoyed using blooms taxonomy level questions because it really helps students to think outside of the box. Giving tests out like these help the students minds grow and it also encourages students to work certain areas of the brain and promote cognitive development and practice higher level thinking skills. I really enjoyed using Google quizzes because they are very easy to create, they are very easy to give, and they are very easy to grade. Once a student completes the quiz you can quickly go online and evaluate how they did and grade them. You can see where they are struggling and where they need help and you can also see where they are doing really well. Once you have all 10 responses, you are then required to find the average, the median, and the range scores. Another way this project fits Standard 7, is that a teacher should be able to “use a variety of formal and informal assessments to evaluate the understanding, progress, and performance of individual students and the whole class”. These Google quizzes are a great way to assess your class. It can be formal or it can be informal. They are very easy to create and it can benefit both the teachers and the students greatly.
Overall, I love creating this project. Even though it was a huge and a very long project, there are many parts to it that I deeply enjoyed. After creating this project, there are a lot of things that I’ve learned along the way and there are a lot of things that I’m going to do differently in the next lesson plan that I create. The next quiz that I create we’ll have slightly different questions, perhaps a little harder. I originally thought my questions were good and challenging but by the test results it looks like they were too easy. The next time I use Blooms Taxonomy when creating test questions, I will try to think more in depth and try my best to challenge my students. I do not use Google very often but after this I really did enjoy it and I think I will use it more often. This project was so beneficial because it’ll help me in the future with my future students and my future classroom. Since this project, I will use Google more often and I believe that all of my tests and quizzes will be following Blooms Taxonomy of Higher Learning.
