Employment

August 2016 - Present

Professor of Smart Grids and Power Systems, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, The University of Melbourne, Australia.

August 2016 - July 2021

Professor of Smart Grids, School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, The University of Manchester, UK. (Part Time)

August 2014 - July 2016

Senior Lecturer in Smart Distribution Networks, School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, The University of Manchester, UK.

January 2011 - July 2014

Lecturer in Smart Distribution Networks, School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, The University of Manchester, UK.

March 2007 - December 2010

Research Fellow in Energy Systems, School of Engineering, The University of Edinburgh, UK.

From March 2007 to February 2010, Dr Ochoa was part of the £2.5m EPSRC Supergen AMPerES (Asset Management and Performance of Energy Systems) industry-academia research consortium. He was responsible for the Activity 3.1 "Strategies to maximise the absorption of new generation". From March 2010 to December 2010, he joined the £7m EPSRC Supergen FlexNet industry-academia research consortium. Research interests related to both projects include use of optimal power flow (OPF) to assess the potential renewable generation capacity of distribution networks considering the use of Smart Grid schemes. This project led to the publication of six refereed journal papers in top ranked journals and a number of top class international conference papers.

Education

May 2003 - November 2006

UNESP Ilha Solteira, Brazil

PhD in Electrical Power Engineering - Graduated November 2006

"Performance of Distribution Networks with Distributed Generators". Research examined the technical impacts of distributed (renewable) generation on distribution networks. Funded by the Brazilian electricity distribution industry through FEPISA and the Brazilian National Counsel of Technological and Scientific Development (CNPq). From October 2004, the European Commission’s highly competitive High Level Scholarship Programme (Alban Programme) funded Dr Ochoa for a year as a Visiting Postgraduate Researcher at Edinburgh. The PhD project led to the publication of four refereed journal papers in top ranked journals and a number of top class international conference papers.

January 2001 - May 2003

UNESP Ilha Solteira, Brazil

Research MSc in Electrical Power Engineering - Graduated May 2003

"Power Flow in Four-Wire Distribution Networks". Research extended and implemented a three-phase power flow algorithm to cater for the neutral wire. Funded by the Brazilian electricity distribution industry through FEPISA. The methodology was implemented in the software UE-TEC (Utilities Expert – Technical) developed by the Brazilian company Elucid. This MSc project led to the publication of three refereed journal papers in top ranked journals.

February 1996 - December 2000

Universidad Nacional de Ingeniria (UNI), Peru

BEng Mechanical and Electrical Engineering - Graduated December 2000

Concentration in Power Systems. Ranked in the top fifth of his class.
